In the autumn of 2009 Anna Nugent, a professional actress who wanted to offer children an alternative creativity & play experience, began to plan a story and drama workshop steeped in the Montessori method. In December of 2009 Story Haven held a pilot program of a series of three workshops with six participants. The children loved the opportunity to play and explore stories and so the plans began for a launch in 2010.
In February of 2010 Amy Elise de Jong came on board as Associate Director. Amy came from a background in urban youth work, after-school instruction and performance. Together Amy and Anna built a robust curriculum and began training other facilitators in their methodology.
By the Spring of 2013 Story Haven had run successful workshops for community events, were based in three schools for in-school once-off sessions and ongoing after-school programs as well as two cultural organizations and had three additional facilitators trained in the Story Haven curriculum.
Currently Story Haven is available for once-off workshops and full workshop series in the Jersey City & Hoboken, NJ, USA as well as in Dublin, Ireland.
